Let’s talk about Thailand! More precisely about Railay Beach in Krabi.
Little piece of land nestles in between 2 rock python.
Only way to go, even if it’s not an island, it’s by boat.
So, most of the bus will drop you at Ao-Nang and then you will sail, on the longboat to West Railay (which is the beach side) otherwise you will be dropped on East Railay; the swamp area.
Airport to Hotel (average time 45mn to 1hrs)
Private transport: BATH 1500
Taxi + boat: BATH 400 to 600
Bus + Boat: BATH 250
Personally, I like the quiet of this place, nothing to compare with Phuket, even though there is also nice beaches and nice scenery there, Railay is way quieter, so don’t go if you are looking for crazy nights, go-go bar, or other stuff, so far there is none…
And don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against crazy parties, it’s just that Railay it is for relax moment, find yourself, or just spend some quality time with your love one…
Both side are full of resort, hostels, and small shops, bars and food stall, at human size as the area is still well preserved and small.
A village feels, on a Paradise Beach…
East Railay, you can find the most shop and food stall and of course only hostel or resort! All beside each other and that’s the swamp area.
Well, compare to some other places, it’s not smelly and not too many mosquitos.
West Railay, it’s the beach, palm tree with white sand and beautiful sunset.
The principal beach do have also variety of shop and food and couples of “Resort” but the second beach, which you can go by East Railay, going to Phra Nang Cave, along the pass and then you also will find the same scenery with a cave full of “Penises”. Excuse me my language but there is no other to describe those artefacts.
The locals are friendly and chilled, they will do stuff but at their own time so when you go to eat, don’t be too impatient. YOU ARE IN HOLIDAY!
For the spending part for the food and drinks, it’s quite standard; BAT 80 (US$2) for a beer, and the food is cheap too. From traditional Thai cuisine, BBQ to decent pizza, you can survive and there are enough restaurants for you to choose from.
In contrast, I would not recommend eating in any hotel, as the food is way pricier than the traditional food stall, and the quality average.
Of course in general, room service is basic and can save you in case of munchies.
For food, I can recommend:
Seed Phad Thai (East Railay): the local cuisine as well as their pancakes.
Last Bar (East Railay): Go for their BBQ and Thai Boxing nights.
Joy Pizza (East Railay): Fine crust and tasty.
Local Thai Food (West Railay): as their name says, the food is local and good.
Flame Tree restaurant (West Railay): good food and drinks.
Chicken Kebab (West Railay): Freshly cooked chicken Kebab.
For drinks, well couples of nice and friendly places I like to go:
Why Not? Bar (East Railay): chilled atmosphere, cool staff, great music.
Last Bar (East Railay): chill beer with Thai boxing night.
Flame Tree (West Railay): Perfect place to quench your thirst after a hot day at the beach.
But there is more bars…. And in general, staff are friendly, Wi-Fi available everywhere.
For the accommodation, you will have the choice, from the backpacker lodge to the Luxury resort, you can find a bed or a room at almost any price, and I’m sure you will check on the different website, to find a place in your price range.
Personally I do like a minimum of comfort, don’t get me wrong, I don’t necessary need the full on luxury package, but a proper and clean room, with, if possible some facilities, it’s still nice.
This time I went to Railay Princess Resort&Spa, located on East Railay.
They have 2 wings, the new and the old one. I was in the old one, which to my opinion, is way more relaxing as the room was facing the greenery, compare to the new wing which the buildings composing this wing are on vis-a-vis. Well, even if, in the new wing, the appliance, especially in the bathroom, are newer, I still like to don’t look into my neighbour’s room…
Good point, they do have 2 pools and a Gym room (in case you need) and internet everywhere.
Overall, it’s a clean resort, not too over pricey, staff is friendly, but as other hotel, Breakfast is average, and I will not recommend their dinner’s BBQ…
Except that, you can go without a fear…
Funny fact: Be careful of the monkeys!!!
They are not dangerous at all but they will steal what ever they can. Most of the morning, they will loot on balconies and in your room if you don’t close the window and on the beach. But I repeat, they are not aggressive at all, so don’t be afraid or be violent with them…
In Railay, you won’t get bored as you can find a lots of activities to do, from rock climbing to elephant ride, snorkelling to gun shooting, and all the different excursion to visit around, it is a perfect place to leave your bag for a couples of days, relax and enjoy the moment…
